You would be happy to hear that I have been working ceaselessly to create a permanent centre in Calcutta, the crown city of Bengal, and I think I am almost succeeded," Paramahansa Yogananda wrote to Rajarsi Janakananda from Calcutta during his tour to India in 1935-36. Yogananda stated in his Autobiography of a Yogi, published in 1946, that "In 1939, Dakshineswar's Yogoda Math, which faces the Ganges, was consecrated. The hermitage, located just a few kilometres north of Calcutta, provides a peaceful retreat for city residents. The Yogoda Satsanga Society and its schools, centres, and ashrams in various regions of India have its headquarters at the Dakshineswar Math." Ranchi Ashram: Paramahansa Yogananda began his life's work at Ranchi in 1917, when he founded an ashram and a "How-to-Live" school for boys, as well as making the worldwide teachings of Kriya Yoga available. The renowned Guru's early living quarters have been maintained as a shrine. Everyone is welcome to use the space for solitary meditation at any time during the day. Dwarahat Ashram: The YSS Ashram is around 1.5 km from Dwarahat town in Uttarakhand's Almora district, and is bordered on all sides by pine forest. The Government Rest House, on the route from town to the Ashram, is on the right, where Sri Daya Mataji slept on her visit to Mahavatar Babaji's cave in 1963-64, when the YSS ashram was not yet established. Yogoda Satsanga Sakha Ashram - Noida was launched in January 2010 after the first phase of building was completed. This phase comprises of an Administration Block and two Retreat Blocks, which are built on a 5-acre property about 4 kilometres from the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border.

How to reach

By Rail

Howrah and Sealdah are the two major railway stations in Kolkata.

Howrah is well connected to other major cities such as Delhi (1450 kilometres), Mumbai (1970 kilometres), Chennai (1660 kilometres), and others. Howrah is 15-20 kilometres from Dakshineswar. Taking a pre-paid cab from outside Howrah station and asking for Sharada math in Dakshineswar (about Rs 200/-) is the most convenient option. The Sharada Math is roughly 200 metres from the YSS ashram.

Taking the local train to Uttarpara and crossing the Hoogly by boat is a cheaper option. It takes around 10 minutes to walk from the ghat to the ashram.

Some trains from the north, the north east, and suburban local trains stop at Saeldah. On the Sealdah- Dankuni line, Dakshineswar is roughly 14 kilometres away.Metro Station nearby is Shymbazar.

By Air

The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport at DumDum connects Kolkata to several cities in India and abroad. Dakshineswar is about 15 km away. Pre paid taxis are available for about Rs 200/-. Please ask for Yogoda in Ariadaha near Sharada Math in Dakshineswar.
