Sawan / Shravan Somwar Vrat

Sawan Somwar Vrat is an auspicious Hindu fast dedicated to Lord Shiva, observed on all Mondays (Somwars) during the holy month of Shravan/Sawan. This month is considered extremely sacred in the Hindu lunar calendar, and Mondays during Shravan hold special importance for devotees of Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The vrat begins after Amavasya (New Moon), marking the arrival of the Sawan / Shravan month. Devotees observe fasts, visit Shiva temples, chant mantras, and offer prayers seeking divine blessings.

📖 Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha (Story)

A wealthy moneylender once lived a prosperous life but remained unhappy because he had no children. He began observing Monday fasts during Sawan with complete devotion, praying to Lord Shiva for a child. Pleased with his dedication, Goddess Parvati requested Lord Shiva to bless him. Lord Shiva agreed but warned that the child would be short‑lived. The moneylender accepted this destiny but continued to worship sincerely. A son was born, and when he turned 12, he went to Kashi with his maternal uncle. Along the way, fate led him to a kingdom where he was mistakenly married to a princess, replacing a one‑eyed prince. Later, during a yagna, the boy suddenly died—as destined. Moved by the grief of the uncle, Goddess Parvati again requested Lord Shiva to revive the child. Shiva blessed the boy with a long life, and he returned safely with his uncle. The king recognized him and remarried him to the princess with honor. The moneylender and his wife were overjoyed, and their faith in Lord Shiva became even stronger. Thus, the story teaches that devotion, sincerity, and purity of heart always attract divine grace.
