History and Significance

According to legend:

  • During the Samudra Manthan, the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) churned the cosmic ocean to obtain Amrit (nectar of immortality).
  • A deadly poison called Halahala emerged first, threatening to destroy all existence.
  • Lord Shiva consumed this poison to protect the universe, causing his throat to turn blue — hence the name Neelkanth.
  • The site where this divine event took place is believed to be the exact location of the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple.

Over time, the temple became a sacred pilgrimage site. Devotees believe that worshipping here grants blessings, purification, and spiritual protection.
The temple hosts two major annual fairs during Maha Shivratri and the Hindu month of Shravan, attracting thousands of Kawariyas who carry holy water from the Ganga in Haridwar.
