Shri Naina Devi Ji Temple is a prominent Shakti Peeth located atop a hill in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. The temple is connected conveniently via National Highway 21, making it easily accessible for pilgrims from neighboring states. Visitors can reach the temple by road via a winding pathway, through well constructed concrete steps, or by taking the popular ropeway (Rajju Marg) that carries devotees from the base to the hilltop. From the temple premises, pilgrims can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Gobind Sagar Lake, a vast reservoir formed by the iconic Bhakra–Nangal Dam.



History and Legends

Foundation

According to traditional beliefs, Raja Bir Chand is credited with establishing the original shrine of Shri Naina Devi Ji. Over centuries, the temple has been renovated and revered as a major pilgrimage site in Himachal Pradesh.


The Legend of Naina, the Gujjar Boy

A well‑known legend tells the story of a young Gujjar boy named Naina, who noticed a miraculous event—a white cow pouring milk over a particular rock. The Goddess later appeared to him in a dream, revealing that the stone was her Pindi. When the king witnessed the divine sign, he ordered a temple to be built there. The temple was named Naina Devi in honor of both the Goddess and the boy.

Mahishapeeth – The Victory Over Mahishasur

Shri Naina Devi Ji is also known as Mahishapeeth.
According to mythology:

  • Mahishasur received a boon of near invincibility, with the condition that only an unmarried girl could defeat him.
  • The Goddess manifested to protect the world, engaged in a fierce battle, and eventually slayed Mahishasur.
  • During the fight, she struck and removed his eyes, leading the Gods to chant “Jai Naina”, giving the temple its name.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Visit

In 1756, Guru Gobind Singh Ji visited Shri Naina Devi Ji before his campaign against the Mughals. He performed a sacred Yagna here, seeking the Goddess’s blessings for victory.
