In the Kollam area, Mata Amritanandamayi Math is located. Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, affectionately known as Amma by her devotees, founded it as a philanthropic and spiritual organisation in 1981. Amritanandamayi is known across the world as a spiritual leader and social reformer.
The Mata Amritanandamayi Math (MAM) is a worldwide charity organisation dedicated to uplifting humanity's spiritual and material well-being. Its headquarters are at Paryakadavu, Alappad Panchayat, Kollam district, Kerala, and it was formed in 1981 by spiritual leader and humanitarian Mata Amritanandamayi. MAM, in collaboration with its sister organisation, the Mata Amritanandamayi Mission Trust, provides disaster assistance, healthcare for the underprivileged, environmental projects, hunger relief, and scholarships for disadvantaged students, among other things. It also administers Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a seven-campus university, Amrita Vidhyalayam, a 55-campus English language CBSE school, and yoga, meditation, and Sanskrit programmes. MAM is a volunteer-run organisation that operates under the philosophy of karma yoga [labour as a heavenly offering]. Its headquarters house about 3,000 people, including residents, monastics, and monks students. People visit MAM on a daily basis in order to obtain Mata Amritanandamayi's blessings. Under the umbrella title of Embracing the World, MAM and Amritanandamayi's other centres and organisations across the world work together. Initially, the ashram was merely Amma's family's home, which was located in the cow shed. Under the starlight, a small group of brahmacharis slept on the sand. Amma had a tiny hut erected adjacent to her parents' house that functioned as a kitchen, and it was in this hut that she slept with the first female disciples. Darshan took held in Amma's father's cowshed, which had been turned into a tiny shrine for the family's cows. This original temple, known as the Kalari, is still in use today and is utilised for holding pujas. The brahmacharis were eventually given cottages near their parents' house, and Amma was given a respectable, though modest, chamber. Amma still remains in this modest room now. As the number of devotees seeking Amma's darshan increased, it became essential to build a larger darshan hall. The magnificent Kali Temple was built at that time. It was the ashram's first large cement construction, and it took five years to complete – from 1988 to 1992 – due to the ashram's limited financial resources at the time. According to Amma's directions, the Kali statue in the shrine was created in Calcutta. Mother Kali is the ego's destroyer. Even the temple became too tiny for big people on evenings after 2000, thus an immense hall was built behind the temple. With 30,000 square feet and no pillars to impede the view, it is now the largest such hall in Southern India. Amma now sings bhajans every night and gives darshan on a regular basis here. Indeed, the Amritapuri of today shows little physical similarity to the one of the early days, with the exception of the early Kalari, which is still intact. Amritapuri is now a metropolis with soaring apartment complexes for residents and guests, hostels for students attending the ashram college across the river, large dining halls, several offices and departments, and a hospital. But, no matter how big it is, it's still very much filled with Amma's presence, who has a hand in every choice. It is nevertheless noteworthy as it is conducted in accordance with the traditional customs of India's sacred land. The ashram's work is done entirely by the inhabitants and tourists. Amritapuri is seen as a spiritual home and a fruitful field where noble spiritual traits can be abundantly nurtured and the harvest of God-realization obtained by Amma's numerous disciples.
