ISKCON Temple, Dwarka, Delhi

The ISKCON Temple in New Delhi, popularly known as Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi Mandir, is one of the most prominent Vaishnava temples in the capital. Dedicated to Sri Sri Radha Krishna, the temple stands as a major center of spirituality, devotion, and Vedic education. Located in East of Kailash, near Hare Krishna Hills, the temple was inaugurated on April 5, 1998, in the presence of national leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj. ISKCON follows the teachings of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, who founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) with the mission of spreading Bhakti-yoga and devotion to Lord Krishna across the globe.

History and Background

ISKCON belongs to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, a spiritual movement centered around devotion to Lord Krishna. The movement emphasizes:

  • Chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra
  • Practicing Bhakti-yoga
  • Reading sacred texts
  • Engaging in devotional service (seva)

The Hare Krishna Movement Origin

  • Lord Krishna reappeared as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu about 500 years ago to spread the chanting of the Holy Names:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Founding of ISKCON

Srila Prabhupada traveled to New York in 1965 with a spiritual mission to share Krishna consciousness globally. He established ISKCON in 1966, which later expanded to hundreds of temples worldwide.

Important milestones:

  • 1966–1968: ISKCON rapidly expanded to major U.S. cities.
  • 1970–1977: Temples established in India—Vrindavan, Mayapur, and Mumbai.
  • 1972: Srila Prabhupada established the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT), now one of the largest Vedic publishers.
  • 1974: ISKCON initiated global food relief programs.
  • Today, ISKCON has 500+ temples and centers worldwide, carrying forward Srila Prabhupada’s mission.

Dr. Thomas J. Hopkins, an academic authority on ISKCON, described Srila Prabhupada as a holy person of deep compassion and humble devotion, whose life was fully dedicated to Krishna.
